Leadership 365: Want Growth? Discover the Power of Habit

The Power of Habit.  Charles Duhigg’s book about habits shares insights on how to develop positive habits and how to break those you have deemed less than productive.   As a school leader, there is much to gain from Duhigg’s work.  If you can better understand people’s habits, you can better shape their environment to lead them towards more productive outcomes.  In a sense, that’s a big part of being a principal.

The principal is often referred to as the “change agent.”  When you hear that, it sounds a little like you are someone who is selling change.

That’s true, but if you want change to work, you not only need to be the agent, but also the change coach, and change supporter.  To do so, an understanding of the relationship between change and the science of habits can be of value to you.

As you move forward at this time of year in establishing a rhythm and groove for your school consider a deeper understanding of the science of habit as presented by Charles Duhigg in The Power of Habit.  It can be a great book study for you, your admin team, your leadership team and even your faculty at large!
