Description
By Dr. Stephen Peters and Dr. Mark Wilson
For ALL students to learn, you have to look at each. And. Every. One. That’s why we should avoid beginning questions about students with ‘how many?’ or ‘what percentage?’. A better way to begin any conversation about students starts with ‘which?’. Which of our students enjoy coming to school? Which of our students retain skills and knowledge with more frequent formative assessment? Which of our students are experiencing trauma or chronic stress? Which of our students are doing good things for other people?
The promise of every one leads to the power of everyone. You’re right, you can’t do it all, but you’re wrong if you think WE can’t do it all. Because we, Mark and Stephen, have each been privileged to work with teams that HAVE done this, at multiple locations, different settings, but all ending the same: everyone can help every one be more successful.
The ideas we share and the stories we offer as evidentiary are not something we just imagined: everything we share in this work are things we have done ourselves (as a part of great, committed teams), things we have taught other school people how to do, and things that YOU can do as well. Both of us are teachers who have been school leaders, who extensively teach and coach teachers and school leaders. We are with you, because we’re one of you.
