The damage from Hurricane Helene to the Southeast is unimaginable. To have that broad of a swath that deep inland is something none of us were prepared for. In addition to the most devastated communities are areas that aren’t getting a lot of regional or national coverage but remain without power, water, and roads.

Just as the damage has been widespread, kindness towards others has been found in equal or greater quantities.

It’s always amazing how easily good can be spread. It’s hard to be the only one doing it, but in times as these, more people rise up to share what they have with others. That makes it easier for everyone.

There’s a challenge for you in that, school leader, school system leader. It’s great and good for you to share what you have with others (hope, encouragement, bottled water, helping hands). Now, can you create momentum with your intentions? Can you move others to do the same, to share with others the tangible and the intangible? Will you invest your time and energy into promoting your people in the business of sharing kindness not only in extreme times but on the regular days as well?

And what day is more regular than Monday? The Carpenters sang that rainy days and Mondays always got them down. In Office Space, we heard the phrase “sounds like somebody’s got a case of the Mondays.” We even invented Sunday Scaries just because of Monday.

What if you flipped the field? What if you chose the most Monday of all the days as your platform to stand on with your idea of sharing what others might need? What if you took back Mondays and turned the energy into Monday Momentum?

Motivational speaker Eric Thomas (also known as “E.T.”) has been doing this for years with his series of “T.G.I.M” videos. http://ericthomas.com If you need some motivation of your own, there’s a lot to work with there.

Picking Monday as your base to set your school off on a successful week just makes sense. It ALSO takes strategy and planning. Your admin team meeting needs to be on Thursday if you’re going to start each with Monday Momentum. If you have it on Monday, you’re not getting things going until Tuesday at the earliest.

And why it matters is this: it’s easier to start things in the right direction than have to redirect them after they get going.

What do you want to promote at your school? In your school system? Start NEXT Monday… plan this week and develop your strategy. Simple is always best. Want to spread good? 10 x 10 always is easy enough. Speak kindly to ten people by 10:00 AM on Monday. Want to start smaller? Make your Monday Momentum goal that everyone reach out to one person with a kindness over the course of the day. The sky’s the limit on what you can do, but as a leader you have to push it to get it going. Then you’ll be amazed at the momentum you create.
